Camshaft and Follower Damage
The first preliminary information from the engine disassembly has arrived. The #3 exhaust valve cam lobe is severely damaged and the tappet surface is cratered. Which is odd considering that I didn't find any metal in the oil filter and only a few scraps in the suction screen. It likely did not run very long with this kind of damage. The banging was likely some very high compression events where the exhaust valve did not open.
