IFR Training Flight, CYNJ, CYYJ, CYXX

The weather cleared up today and finally allowed for an IFR training flight.  Icing conditions has kept the whole enterprise grounded for several weeks.

The flight involved a hold at Whatcom VOR, a precision approach into Victoria, and a non-precision approach into Abbotsford.  This is the same sequence of events as the eventual flight test.

The hold entry was a bit shaky as I took up the correct heading immediately but failed to correct for the north-east wind quickly enough.  Other mistakes included not identifying the beacon and keeping the mixture rich.  On the plus side the radio work was on the money.  There was also a climb in the hold as terminal adjusted the altitude from 4000 to 6000.

The precision approach into Victoria was smooth.  I have to remember to track the beacon properly during the FASBO 4 arrival.  Fast jet traffic behind meant that I had to keep the speed up on final.

The non-precision into Abbotsford went much better with the aircraft lining up nicely and a quieter slower approach.

27.4 of the required 40 hours of training is now complete.  Next flight is a cross-country to Long Beach/Tofino.
